History: Here.
Personality:
”Let’s get this straight from the start:
I’m nobody special.”
First Aid will never be placed as highly as such accomplished doctors and surgeons like Ratchet and Pharma (though it could be said that one would never want to be compared to the latter after the outcome on Messatine). He’s never really going to be anyone famous with a list of feats of medical magic behind his name, but it can’t be denied that he cares deeply about his patients. Not so much ‘lacking in ambition’ as simply not having a drive to push himself to those kinds of heights, as a doctor, he was entirely happy to simply be a doctor, but his luck was as such that he didn’t even get to keep that position.
Despite being the kind of mech to prefer goofing off over any serious research in his down time (as shown in the prose story Bullets), he is capable and hard-working when the situation calls for it as well as being quick-minded and perceptive. Not only does he suspect Pharma’s involvement in the red rust epidemic at Delphi and manage to send a distress call that was bound to be noticed – using the data channel that used to transmit Wreckers: Declassified – he also notices that Pharma’s injuries at Delphi are self-inflicted (and also, at a later date on the Lost Light, injuries found on Red Alert). Adaptable in a crisis, he quickly takes command at Delphi when all hell breaks loose, remaining calm, rational and determined to save as many Cybertronians as possible. His occasional laid-back attitude aside, First Aid is a brilliant, inventive mech and will go to great lengths to do anything and everything possible for a patient, even keeping his curiosity after death.
Above all else, though, despite his good nature, medical expertise and occasional, peculiar little quirks, First Aid is mostly unremarkable, at least in his own opinion. He is an enthusiastic, earnest individual with a dry sense of humour that displays itself in sarcastic quips and tends towards viewing things with a realistic outlook… at least for as long as it suits him. The medic can get a bee in his metaphorical bonnet over certain ideas and become almost unbearable with them, with Ambulon’s exasperation when he (once again) brings up his idea to try and “jumpstart” Fortress Maximus using his own spark being a good example.
It isn’t too far outside of the realm of unusual, some mechs might say, for First Aid to get a little obsessive over things. An avid fan of the Wreckers, after being given a top secret mission by Springer he developed the habit of checking the badge of every single Autobot who came through Delphi, something that got him referred to Rung – a renowned psychologist – and subsequently demoted to the position of nurse for unexplained “erratic behaviour”. He can definitely keep a secret, that much is for sure, even if it’s to his own detriment. It became so much of a habit, in fact, that Ambulon began to dismiss it as just a thing that First Aid did and First Aid was more than happy to let it go at that.
Maybe it wouldn’t have become so severe if it hadn’t been for the medic’s level of dedication to begin with, but he’s never going to be someone who’s known as being particularly discreet. First Aid tends to wear his emotions on his arm plating. If he’s angry, upset or excited, it shows to everyone around him.
After leaving Messatine aboard the Lost Light, he was promised the position of Chief Medical Officer by Ratchet… who then went on to not give that position up, much to First Aid’s private and unvoiced frustration. It left the medic with the rank of ‘CMO in training’, something that he bore in silence until the events on Luna-1 (issue #21), where he finally snapped and aired his grievances to Ratchet while being faced with Ambulon’s death… which had already long since occurred.
Like all people, he has his moments of courage and wilful stubbornness, being opinionated and starkly blunt when he needs to be, or agreeable and kind in turn. As a doctor, his bedside manner is the reasonable and carefully honest sort that always gives the facts no matter how difficult they might be to hear. Absolutely dedicated to his work, he stands up to Chromedome’s grieved anger over the fact that the jumpstarting between himself and Rewind didn’t work without taking it personally (later succeeding using Whirl instead) and spends months teaching Rung how to tell the difference between objects and people again after his head is reconstructed following an accident.
He is certainly a ‘leave no stone unturned’ type of doctor, stubborn to a fault but it can never be doubted that he will perform to the best of his ability, no matter what the scenario.
[The following contains information from after his canon point, which I believe to be important nonetheless]
Life persists is something that he says once, which illustrates his view on things very well, but even he has his limits. While what happens on Luna-1 itself is after the canon point he’s being pulled from, I feel it important to note that after witnessing Ambulon’s death at Pharma’s hands and subsequently being faced with the truth that Pharma was in no way sorry about it, or about anything that he’d done (he seemed to find it funny), First Aid decapitated him with a short-range blast from his weapon. Immediately after, he broke down and had to be led away from the scene by Rung and upon returning to the Lost Light, shut himself away and refused to talk to anyone. In issue #30, we see him again, with Ratchet noting that death is the only thing that interests him anymore (sic). This, I think, shows First Aid’s love of his work in a heartbreaking light – he values life so highly that when he himself ends one, despite everything Pharma had done, he can barely live with himself.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:
Personality-wise, First Aid’s biggest strength is without a doubt his dedication to his profession and to his patients. He is determined and loyal, even to a fault and will do everything within his power to bring a positive outcome to a medical emergency. He’s a highly skilled medic, even impressing Ratchet, more than willing to try new procedures and do anything at all to save a life.
In terms of weaknesses, First Aid often downplays himself and his abilities (‘nobody special’, he says). He’s also impulsive and won’t think twice about putting himself into danger if he believes it’s right to do so.
In terms of physical weakness, due to a presumably incurable or difficult to treat unnamed condition that affects his transformation cog, he is unable to transform into his alt mode (presumably some kind of Cybertronian emergency vehicle). Symptoms of the condition include unusual weight distribution, reduced flexion in the spinal strut, and leading with the right leg.

“And now I’m wondering… if I really made the right decision after all.”
First Aid lets out a slow vent as he tosses his datapad down and takes a seat beside Rung in the medibay, elbows on the edge of the berth and his head propped up on his hands. His vision lingers on the steady glow from the slimmer mech’s spark chamber then flicks up to the monitors showing his life signs. Gently, he takes Rung’s hand in his, squeezes it, but gets no response.
“You know, he probably saved our lives, but… could we have done it without him? He’s obviously unstable and you…” He pauses, passing his thumb over the empty hole where Fort Max had ripped off Rung’s. “I don’t know. I bet you’d have something to say to me about patience and understanding, or something.” Sitting back, the plating across his forehead shifts into a frown over the top of his visor. He sets Rung’s hand down again, patting the back of it. “I didn’t even know that it would work, but I had to do something.”
Finally, his attention drifts up, slowly, across Rung’s torso and up to his shoulders to the space where his head ought to be… and isn’t. There’s nothing but a brain module, still attached to the body, still showing signs of consciousness but not nearly as much as First Aid would like. For a moment, he’s silent, then he clicks out a half-laugh and shakes his head.
“I know, I know. You’d tell me it isn’t my fault. You’re probably right, but I can’t really blame Swerve, either. Everyone knows his aim is awful.” The medic rubs two fingers across his faceplate, shifting restlessly before he’s on his feet again, leaning against the side of the berth. There’s something terrible and yet so terribly interesting about this. He can’t remember the last time he saw a mech with their brain module exposed like this. Or one that was still alive, at least.
Even if he pulls through, Rung is going to have a long road ahead of him in terms of recovery. First Aid is fine with that. He’s never been one to do anything by halves. He picks up his datapad again, moving to curl his free hand over his patient’s shoulder. “We’re going to do everything we can, Rung. I’m going to do everything I can.” His voice softens. “You’ll come through this. Don’t worry about Max. Just think about yourself for a change.”
